“Bridget Jones’s Baby” Delivers the Expected

There’s no doubt Bridget Jones has a following and fans will always show up to see what the middle-aged famous singleton is up to.

I remember being in high school when the second film of the series, The Edge of Reason, came out and I’ve been waiting on pins and needles for over one decade to see what hilariously challenging, yet relatable, situation Renée Zellweger’s character will get into next.

I arrived at Vintage Village Theatre in Coronado for the showing of Bridget Jones’s Baby and, to my surprise, was greeted by an audience full of men and women, but mostly women, who were 50 years old and up. I overheard two female moviegoers predicting the movie’s outcome. Needless to say, the film delivered the expected.

In the movie, Bridget Jones, a forty three year old news producer discovers she’s pregnant after having relations with two men within a short period of time. Jones is unsure of which man is the baby’s father. Could it be Mark Darcy, Jones’s old flame who is notorious for putting his work before his love-life, or Jack Qwant, played by McDreamy Patrick Dempsey, a new wealthy American love interest.

SPOILER ALERT
While there may have been more than one bump in the movie (i.e. lack of comedic relief and poor quality of acting), the film concludes on a high note with the revelation of who’s the baby daddy baby’s father and the long-awaited union of Jones and Mr. Darcy. Every ounce of my being wanted Zellweger’s character to fall in love with and end up with Dempsey’s character, but, of course, Director Sharon Maguire wouldn’t let that happen.

“I’m leaving this movie wondering what’s next for Bridget Jones,” said Helen M., a Coronado moviegoer. “The movie was okay, but not the best out of the three [films].”
