Please Don’t Call Coronado an Island

Maybe I am just getting old and crotchety (my parents moved to Coronado in 1961), but it bothers me when people try to make Coronado something it is not.

The words “Coronado” and “Island” should not be used next to each other unless you are talking about the three islands owned by Mexico some 15 miles south and a bit west of Coronado.  It seems to me that the use of those words together (when not talking about the true Coronado Islands) is disingenuous/ignorant at best, and stupid, pretentious, and/or misleading at worst.

Where we live is not an island, and it never has been.  Even Coronado’s original developer/promoter Elisha Babcock did not call it “Coronado Island,” he called it “Coronado Beach.” As far as I know, it was never “officially” called an island until sometime in the 1980s or 1990s when certain people decided it would enhance their status in the world to live on an “island.” Don’t get me wrong, I graduated from CHS, and I was, and always will be, an “Islander.”  I have no problem with names like “Island Pasta.”  I do have a problem with “Coronado Island Marriott Hotel,” or the sign when driving onto Coronado which says “Coronado Island.” In my mind, they just make us look dumb…
