Seeing big blue USPS mailboxes around town may be a thing of the past. We recently went out to a few locations to drop off outgoing mail and came up empty – even the one off Spreckels Park along Orange Avenue has been removed. However, we did find one outside of Central Liquor at 2nd Street and Orange Ave (above) as well as one at Sixth Street and Pomona Ave (below).
We tried multiple times to reach out to the USPS post office at 1320 Ynez Pl, but did not hear back. Most likely, the removal of boxes is due to lack of use. We spoke to a USPS mail carrier, who asked to remain anonymous, and he said that many folks along his route have complained about the ‘missing boxes’. He also said that it’s harder for the elderly to get down to the post office or find parking.
One publication shared that there used to over 600,000 boxes across the United States and now there are less than 160,000.
All we know is that it’s getting harder and harder to find a collection box around Coronado. It’s most likely due to folks using the Internet and not sending ‘snail mail’. Of course, as people shop online more and more, you will be seeing an increase in UPS and FedEx trucks.
