Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.
Traffic Calming Project Open House
The community is invited to attend the final public meeting for the Third and Fourth Streets Traffic Calming project. The meeting will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, November 10, in the Nautilus Room at the Coronado Community Center, 1845 Strand Way. The meeting will be held in an open house format and City staff and the consultant team will be on hand to discuss the recommended traffic calming plan. The public is invited to drop in any time during the three-hour window to review maps, talk to the project team, and provide input. A brief presentation will be made to provide an overview of the project history and highlight the results of the survey conducted in August. The public is encouraged to attend to provide feedback. Orange Avenue Accessible Pedestrian Signals and Tenth Street Left Turn Lanes
The contractor installed the new signal poles and striping this past week and is scheduled to complete the finish work, including replacing the sidewalk concrete that was removed to install the signal equipment, over the next few days. Officials with the California Department of Transportation must inspect the new left-turn signal to ensure it is functioning properly before it can be activated. That is expected to take place early next week.
Council Meeting Actions Document/Rebroadcasts
The City provides a document following each City Council meeting which lists the actions taken at the meeting. The community can find the current and previous City Council Actions documents online by visiting www.coronado.ca.us and searching for City Council Actions. The document is posted to the News Center section of the website the day following the meeting. Here’s the most recent edition: City Council Meeting Actions 11/4/2014. The City also would like to remind the community that the City rebroadcasts its council meetings on Coronado TV (Time Warner Cable’s Channel 19 and AT&T’s Channel 99) at 5 p.m. on the day immediately following the regularly held meeting. Meetings generally are held the first and third Tuesday of every month. Some meetings are canceled due to holidays. Those interested in viewing past meetings, may at any time visit the City’s Public Meeting Video Library and select from a list of past City Council and Planning Commission meetings. Viewers have the ability to skip to the item of their choice or watch the entire meeting online.
Silver Strand Half Marathon
The Silver Strand Half Marathon is next weekend but now is a good time to remind residents of what to expect. At 7 a.m. on Sunday, November 16, approximately 4,000 runners will leave Sunset Park near Naval Air Station North Island, and travel south on Ocean Boulevard to the Silver Strand. Runners will continue south on State Route 75 into Imperial Beach. To facilitate the portion of the run on SR 75, Coronado Police will shut down the southbound side of SR 75. The traffic diversion will go into effect at approximately 6:30 a.m. Both northbound and southbound traffic will share the northbound lanes of SR 75. There will be a single lane in each direction on the northbound side, delineated by traffic cones. A temporary reduced speed limit of 45 mph will also be in effect. Motorists should anticipate slight delays. Traffic is expected to return to its normal configuration by noon and all equipment will be removed by 12:30 p.m. Notices have been mailed to impacted residents and agencies.
Election Information

Teddy Bear Drive
This year’s Law Enforcement Teddy Bear Drive for Rady Children’s Hospital will be held on Tuesday, December 9, from 8 a.m. to noon. The Coronado Police Department asks the community to donate a new teddy bear or stuffed animal, with tags attached, for children who find themselves at the hospital around the holidays. All teddy bear donations will be delivered to young patients in December. Many Coronado residents may not know that this popular and well-established county-wide event was started 24 years ago in Coronado by Officer Brian Hardy, who is helping with this year’s event along with other local officers. Coronado Officer Sam Sellers is the local representative heading up efforts. In addition to collection sites here in town, there also will be a Teddy Bear collecting event from 5 to 7 p.m. at Chick-fil-A on Sports Arena Boulevard on November 18. Several law enforcement agencies will be present with displays of specialized equipment, and there will be a play area for kids. Look out for the collection bins, which will be placed around the community in mid-November.
