Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Eucalyptus Tree Removal Update
The City’s tree maintenance contractor removed two of the four Eucalyptus trees that posed an unacceptable risk from the public right-of-way in the 100 block of E Avenue on September 22. The development of a replacement tree mitigation plan is being accelerated and will include a special meeting of the Street Tree Committee and a replacement recommendation that will go before the City Council for deliberation at the October 7 City Council meeting. The Street Tree Committee will meet on Tuesday, September 30, at 2:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Public Services building, 101 B Ave. Members of the public are welcome to attend. Current suggestions for possible replacement trees include three varieties of Eucalyptus, which are the Ghost Gum, Silver Dollar Gum and the Lemon Scented Gum. The final recommendation will take into consideration the tree’s compatibility with the unique character of the 100 block of E Avenue, public safety, suitability and availability of the trees. For the two remaining trees, removal will be scheduled at a date to be determined following the October 7 City Council meeting.
Street Tree Committee Vacancy
There will be one vacancy on the Street Tree Committee as of November 1, 2014. Applications are being accepted until 5 p.m. on Monday, October 6. Additional information can be found on the flier below or by contacting the City Clerk’s Office at (619) 522-7320.
Public Safety Open House Set for October 5
Coronado Firefighters and Coronado Police Officers invite the community to celebrate the City’s 22nd annual Open House on Sunday, October 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Officials will close off the streets around Coronado’s main fire house on Sixth Street near D Avenue as well as streets near Coronado’s Police Department. Coronado Police Department will give residents tours of their facilities. Other local, state and federal public safety agencies will be on hand to provide information on the services they provide and to answer questions. The Public Safety Open House, which is held annually during Fire Prevention Week, runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s a family-friendly day with activities for children, such as face-painting and a coloring contest. Hot dogs are free while supplies last and musical entertainment will be provided. Public safety officials will provide residents with information to help prevent fires at home and protect their families from being victims of crime. Coronado’s Open House event has become a public safety expo featuring local and outside agencies with the Coronado acting as the host. The Open House is a great way to educate many people about public and fire safety and the services available to them.
Elephant Cage’ Demolition Update
The Navy has notified the City that its plans to demolish the Wullenweber Antenna Array, Naval Radio Receiving Facility, just south of the Coronado Cays, has been delayed to mid-October. The demolition project was originally set to begin in September. The demolition supports Department of Defense and Navy initiatives to eliminate obsolete facility inventory. According to the Navy, the Wullenweber Antenna Array is a visual landmark along the Silver Strand. It was built in 1964 and is considered an outstanding example of Cold War-era defense construction. The Navy plans to keep five of the tallest screens, some guy wires and anchorage posts.
Naval Base Coronado Coastal Campus Public Hearing
The City has received notice that the Coastal Commission will be conducting a public hearing in Half Moon Bay sometime between November 12-14 to consider the Navy’s Coastal Consistency Determination for the proposed Naval Base Coronado Coastal Campus planned for the site previously referred to as the Naval Radio Receiving Station. The City recently commented on the Draft Environmental Impact Study that was prepared for this project. The project involves the construction of 24 projects, comprising nearly 1.5 million square feet of facilities and associated infrastructure, constructed over a 10-year period.
Coronado is Turning 125
Coronado residents voted to incorporate on December 6, 1890, switching to governance by a local board of trustees. Watch the weekly City Manager’s updates for more information on how the City of Coronado plans to celebrate its 125th anniversary. Events are being planned throughout 2015 to mark this important milestone in the City’s history.
Tennis Center to Offer USTA After School Tennis
The Coronado Tennis Center is introducing United States Tennis Association After School Tennis, at Village Elementary, beginning in October. This will be a low-cost Recreation program that takes place at the School’s playground. The City’s Tennis Coordinator Sue Hites is very excited about this new venture. The Recreation Department will release more information on this new program as it becomes available.
