Coronado Public Safety Open House Set for Sunday

Who
: Coronado Fire and Police Departments

What: Public Safety Open House

When: Oct. 6, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Coronado, CA Coronado Firefighters and Coronado Police Officers invite the community to celebrate the City’s annual Open House on Sunday, October 6.

Thousands of Coronado residents are expected to fill the streets around the City’s public safety facilities to meet and greet their local public safety officials. The Public Safety Open House will feature visits with members of the City’s Fire Department as well as the Police Department Headquarters.

“This is the Fire Department’s 21st Open House, held as part of Fire Prevention Week, however, we have always had demonstrations of all public safety services provided to the community at our event,” said Fire Chief Mike Blood.

This year, Blood said, the Police Department was brought in at a higher level to create a more inclusive Public Safety Open House to further enhance the Police Department’s relationship, as well as those of all regional public safety agencies, with the Coronado community.

The streets are traditionally closed around Coronado’s main fire house on Sixth Street near D Avenue so locals can check out what Firefighters do on the job. This year, the streets around the Police Department also will be closed to allow easy travel between the facilities.

“We are proud to open our doors to the public,” said Police Chief Jon Froomin. “We all work together throughout the year for the good of the community.”

Public safety officials from around San Diego County will provide information about their services and answer the public’s questions. A few of the agencies participating this year are Federal Fire Department San Diego, Imperial Beach Fire Department, U.S. Fish & Wildlife, California Department of Forestry, San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, San Diego Police Department, California Highway Patrol and San Diego Harbor Police. Local Lifeguards will have their popular dunk tank and there will be music, a coloring contest, a climbing wall and rides on the Little Fire Truck.

The Public Safety Open House runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Firefighters will provide residents with fire prevention information. Agencies from around the county will occupy resource booths. Members of the Coronado Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT, will talk about how to be prepared for disaster and conduct a fire extinguisher demonstration. The Coronado Emergency Radio Operators also will provide demonstrations.
