After a long summer of training and competing, the Coronado Aquatics Club headed to the island of Oahu to compete in the 46th Annual Hawaiian Invitational earlier this month. The boys competed in the 16u and 18u divisions and the girls competed in the 18u and Open divisions. The tournament hosted teams from New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii, and the mainland.
The boys were dominant in the 16u division. They posted a 10-7 over Villa Park from Southern California to win the tournament. Daniel Dedina was named tournament MVP.
The boy’s 18u team made it to the finals but was defeated by Loyola High School from Southern California. The final score was 10-4. Coronado team fought hard until the end.
The girls were entered in the Open Division to gain valuable experience. They played against teams consisting of present and past collegiate players. The Coronado 18u girl’s team consisted of girls 14 to 18 years old. Coronado posted another tournament victory with an exciting win over New Zealand’s Junior National Team. Regulation time ended in a tie causing the game to go to a shootout. Each team gets to pick five shooters to shoot one on one against the opposing teams goalie. Coronado shot second. Goalie Shannon Spence blocked two of the five shooters from New Zealand, so, Coronado needed only four of their five shooters to win the game with a13-12 win for Coronado. Mackenzie Wiley was named tournament MVP.
In true Hawaii fashion the winners were each awarded a wooden pineapple!
In addition to tournament play, the teams were able to take advantage of some much needed “free time” and head out to one of Oahu’s many beautiful beaches.
