Coronado struggles with Navy accident and noise plan


The city of Coronado has been granted a legislative reprieve from a challenging deadline to adopt what are likely to be controversial land use policies required to comply with the Navy’s still-confidential accident and noise plan for North Island Naval Air Station.

Pressure to amend the General Plan and other land use guides is not expected to intensify until after a new deadline closer to 2017, but the stakes are so high for Coronado residents and businesses that city leaders felt early intervention by the Legislature was imperative.

The city says it needs the extra time to minimize what may loom ahead: severe economic impacts growing out of aligning its future development with the Navy’s plans for the adjacent airfield.
