After six months of a major remodel, Walgreens Coronado is just an inspection away from opening at 925 Orange Avenue. Local management has shared with eCoronado.com that they will hopefully be open within 5-7 business days and if you stop by and see folks inside preparing the store, be sure to tap on the window and ask for a personal tour of the store.
The store has over 9,000 square feet of goods and services that include: pharmacy & health, photo, contact lenses, beauty, personal care, medicine, vitamins, sexual wellness, diet/fitness, baby/toys, households, seasonal, souvenirs fresh ground coffee, packaged sandwiches, and drinks (non-alcohol).

Prior to Walgreens, this location was a Petco, which closed in June of 2009 and and prior to that, it housed Home World Savings and Bank of America (remember the Petco fish tanks in the bank vault?). Residents have been divided over whether a Walgreens was needed in Coronado since other pharmacy-related stores are present in Coronado. Since then, the Coronado Pharmacy has closed at 918 Orange Avenue and there is a ‘for lease’ sign at Central Drug at 1106 Orange Avenue which means it may be going out of business – Central has been at that location since 1893.
The Walgreens remodel included a new parking lot, roof, elevator, electrical, plumbing, heating/air, outdoor benches, adding windows along the Orange Avenue wall and more trees.
A mosaic designed by Millard Owen Sheets was kept and restored as well as a sailing terra cotta art piece that was under the awning of the Petco building. The mosaic was originally part of the Home Savings bank that occupied this space.
