Port approves bridge lighting plan – $8 million sought to make the bridge glow by 2015

The San Diego-Coronado Bridge would glow throughout San Diego Bay under a funding plan approved Tuesday by the San Diego Unified Port District.

“You will be able to see this bridge from all five of the member cities,” said port commissioner Lee Burdick. “There will be incredible vista views.”

However, there’s one hangup: money.

The project, as designed by British artist Peter Fink’s team, is estimated to cost between $6 million and $8 million and the port only set aside $75,000 to mount a fund-raising drive.

Commissioner Ann Moore said the campaign also should take into account ongoing maintenance costs or else, the lights could resemble “blinking neon signs,” as Burdick put it.
