The fan-shaped area, stretching nearly a mile offshore adjacent to a small arms firing range, received a “naval danger zone” designation from the Army Corps of Engineers on July 7.
The 12-lane pistol and 10-lane rifle range was built in 1958, but was closed by the Navy in 2008, pending establishment of the security zone. The Navy was concerned that bullet ricochets might endanger boaters — even though the range is surrounded by high dirt berms, designed to contain projectiles.
