Coronado-based Navy SEAL among those killed in Afghanistan helicopter crash

Navy Lt. Brendan John Looney, a member of a SEAL team based in Coronado, was among the nine U.S. military personnel killed in the crash of a helicopter in Afghanistan on Monday, the Department of Defense announced Wednesday.

Looney, 29, of Owings, Md., was an All-American lacrosse player at the Naval Academy, from which he graduated in 2004. He was commissioned as a naval intelligence officer and served in Korea before joining the SEALs. He was assigned to one of the Coronado-based teams in June 2008.

Two other SEALs and a Naval Special Warfare support technician — all from East Coast teams — were also killed, along with five Army air crew members, in the crash in Zabul province in southern Afghanistan. Three coalition personnel are in critical condition at a U.S. hospital in Afghanistan, the Navy said.
