Since the event inception twenty-five years ago by the California Coastal Commission, here are a few of the things that thousands of volunteers have accomplished on annual Coastal Cleanup Day according to www.cleanupday.org: (1) Engaged nearly 1 million volunteers across the state of California since its inception 25 years ago. (2) Protected species across the globe, including local shrikes, California least tern and the Green sea turtle. (3) Prevented marine animals across the state of California from accidentally ingesting plastic debris, including plastic bags commonly mistaken for jellyfish by many sea turtles, and brightly colored pieces of plastic eaten by seabirds. (4) Reduced the number of marine species killed by plastic debris, which currently stands at 1 million each year. (5) Just last year, prevented 160,000 pounds of debris from continuing to contaminate local waterways, beaches, and bays, and 13 million pounds globally. (6) Slowed the growth of the Pacific Gyre garbage patch, a plastic soup of marine debris that covers an area of open ocean estimated to be at least twice the size of Texas. (7) Protected and enhanced San Diego’s natural heritage, from our world-famous beaches to our picturesque open space canyons. (8) Promoted sustainability in San Diego, through reusable bottle and bag giveaways thus discouraging the use of disposable plastic products. (9) Joined 104 other countries and 42 U.S. states at 6,485 sites in a global effort. (10) Tracked data on the types of marine debris found, leading to important legislation and behavior change, such as smoking bans on local beaches. Directions: Silver Strand State Beach is located off State Route 75 across from the Coronado Cays between Coronado Village and Imperial Beach. *************************** END PRESS RELEASE**************** For further information about this press release, contact Coronado City Councilwoman Barbara Denny through her website at www.barbaratdenny.com.
