The girls’ varsity squad continued to dominate this past week against two Western League teams. Playing Patrick Henry High School for the second time, Coronado beat them handily for the second time, with a total score of 15-3.
Last Tuesday, the doubles teams swept all of their matches, “having to come back from behind,” said Coach Moore. Ellie Johnson and Marla Steel, as always, persisted through a tough set against Patrick Henry’s Line 2 Doubles team. After having been down in that set, they won in another tiebreaker, winning the set at 7-6. Kayla Sacks and Alejandra Gonzalez similarly had to come back from a 0-4 advantage for their opponents, winning 7-5.
Then on Thursday, Coronado hosted Academy of Our Lady Peace, dominating the match, once again, at 13 sets to 5. Elsa Östermarker and Olivia Strong won two of their three matches. The third match was the first loss this pair has ever had out of their eighteen sets in Western League matches. Coronado’s other two doubles lines fell to this same team. “Overall, a solid showing for the doubles teams this week though I want to see more and better net play,” commented Coach Moore. Previously, Coronado’s singles players fell to the top singles player for OLP. After an inspirational guest talk by local tennis professional, Angelica Gavaldon, Hannah Quirk rose to the challenge and came out the victor in the match against this same player, “probably playing the best singles set of her Islander career.” Hannah won her set at 6-3.
Coronado faces two rivals this coming week: La Jolla High School and Cathedral Catholic High School. Although Coronado played consistently against La Jolla their previous match, Coach Moore expects a tougher match as they host La Jolla this time. The recent match against Cathedral Catholic was incredibly close, winning by a single set, so this next one should be an exciting match to follow on Thursday.
Overall, the team’s season record is 11 wins to 1 loss. Coronado keeps their streak in the Western League, with seven matches won.
