UPDATE: June 3, 3:00pm
On Friday June 3, 2016 at approximately 1003 hours, Coronado Police Dispatch received a 911 call of a fall victim. The caller advised the construction worker was conscious and breathing. Police units arrived on scene and discovered one person down on the ground and several others around him. As units began assessing the scene they discovered a second quickly followed by a third and then a fourth construction worker overcome by fumes. Officers cleared the area of other bystanders. As Coronado Fire medics were treating the four affected construction workers, the first officer on scene began to show the same symptoms as the other victims. Additional assistance was requested for Diego County Hazmat as well as San Diego Fire Hazmat. All five victims were transported to Scripps Mercy and UCSD hospitals. San Diego Fire and County Hazmat conducted air samplings of the structure and determined the unsafe levels of the chemicals were still present in a small portion of the basement. However, the surrounding areas were deemed safe. As a result, the City Building Inspector issued a stop work order until all areas are deemed safe and within building code requirements.
