Highlights from the City Manager’s Weekly Update: November 20

flag_cityEach week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.

Gallery Grand Opening:  As part of the year-long celebration of Coronado’s 125th anniversary, the Cultural Arts Commission sponsored a grand opening last night of a newly created public art gallery. About 200 people attended the opening of the Coronado Community Center Gallery, or the C3 Gallery, in the Community Center. The gallery was supported by donations from the Coronado Woman’s Club, the Coronado Art Association and from friends and family of Doug and Dale St. Denis. The gallery’s first exhibition, “Visions of Coronado,” celebrates Coronado’s vibrant 125 year history. Twenty-three local artists and more than 30 pieces of art inspired by Coronado will be on display through March. Located in the corridor of the north wing of the Community Center, the gallery is comprised of two large, glass-encased niches and a freestanding wood and glass cabinet for 3-dimensional work of various media.

Library’s High-speed Internet Unveiling:  The City of Coronado invites the community to the unveiling and a demonstration of the Coronado Public Library’s new high-speed Internet, on Wednesday, December 2, at 4:30 p.m. The new broadband is not only 10 times faster than what is now offered, it will result in a 300 percent cost savings for the City. At 1 Gigabit per second, Library patrons should see the highest speed broadband in Coronado. Coronado was accepted into a program earlier this year of the California State Library to bring high-speed broadband to all of the State’s public libraries. Through the nonprofit Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California, or CENIC, the Library will be connected to the super computer at the University of California, San Diego, and a high-capacity, 3,800-mile fiber optic network. The Library is pleased to offer this 21st century digital resource to its community. We hope to see you there.

Turkey Trot Impacts:  The second annual 5K Turkey Trot is set for 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, at Tidelands Park. Residents can expect some traffic impacts in the area. Several hundred participants will gather then depart from Tidelands, head under the San Diego-Coronado Bridge underpass up to Glorietta Boulevard and circle back, running along San Diego Bay to Centennial Park. There, they will turn around and run back to Tidelands Park to end the race.

Holiday Lighting Set:  Coronado kicks off the official start of the holiday season with the annual lighting of the civic holiday tree at Coronado Rotary Plaza on Friday, December 4. The fun begins at 6 p.m. when Santa Claus flips the switch, turning on hundreds of twinkling lights. People of all ages are expected to attend this traditional event, as the City’s tall pine, the decorated trees along Orange Avenue and, new this year, a civic menorah in the plaza will dazzle in lights. This is the first year the City’s holiday celebration will feature a civic menorah, a traditional symbol of the Jewish holiday much like the Christmas tree represents Christmas. The holiday lights will remain on through December at the plaza at Orange and Isabella avenues near Tenth Street. The City proudly recognizes and honors the different traditions for celebrating the winter-holiday season and those who celebrate them. There will be music and festive holiday refreshments. The event is free and open to the public.
