Coronado HS Coach Kiko Medina (Nado Select) gears up for another Islander girls soccer season as the non-league games kickoff next week. After coming up just shy of winning their division last season, Medina says his team is ready to play. In their first tournament game of the season this past Tuesday, Dec. 1, the Islanders held Poway HS to a 1-1 tie. Medina’s squad awaits the return of players finishing up club, but he says he’s pleased with his team’s opening performance. “It went pretty well for our first game,” Medina said. “Tying against a team like Poway definitely shows we can look forward to a good season.” The Islanders won the Division IV title in 2008. Last season Coronado earned the title of Western league co-champions, which led to the Division III finals and a chance at winning another title. Unfortunately for Coronado, they fell to La Jolla HS in the championship match. Instead of dwelling on their loss, Medina’s team is using last year’s division defeat to fuel their upcoming season. “Winning in 2008 and then getting back to the finals in 2009, but not quite getting it done, gives the team extra motivation,” Medina said. “I think they definitely want to get back and continue to be there.” Medina says his squad shows a lot of talent this season with all his players demonstrating they could both start and play full games. With such quality players, Medina says he’s looking forward to an exciting season. “I’ll let the girls show what they can do and how they can be creative on the field,” Medina said. “I think it’ll be enough to get us back to the playoffs.” This week the Islanders finish up the Baron’s Tournament before their first non-league game at home next Friday against Eastlake HS.
