San Diego Bay Parade of Lights (Dec. 13th & 20th)

The Port of San Diego presents the 38th Annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights 2009 On December 13 and 20, an estimated 80,000 spectators will line the tidelands to view what organizers refer to as a traditional Christmas present to San Diego from the boating community. Nearly 80 vessels, adorned with holiday lights and decorations, will light up the Big Bay. “The Parade of Lights is an annual tradition where boat owners and Port tenants work together to celebrate the holidays and promote boating on San Diego Bay,” said Board of Port Commission Chairman Stephen P. Cushman. “It’s free, it’s festive and it brings people down to the waterfront.” The explosion of fireworks will sound the start the parade at 5:30 p.m. The parade takes approximately one hour to one and one-half hours to pass any given point along the parade route. The anticipated route is as follows: the parade is scheduled to head east from Shelter Island and arrive at Harbor Island by 6 p.m. From there, it will continue on to the Embarcadero, arriving there about 6:30 p.m. The procession is expected to sail by Seaport Village at approximately 7 p.m., before finishing at the Coronado Ferry Landing at about 7:30 p.m. The free event is sponsored by the Port of San Diego and is organized by San Diego Port tenants, boating enthusiasts and volunteers.
