Whether she was promoting tourism in Coronado, walking her standard poodles or working to expand and renovate the Coronado Library, Mrs. Hoppe did it with style and grace and dressed to a T.
Her career and civic volunteerism melded with her love of Coronado and her unwavering commitment to the betterment of her community. She was executive director of the Coronado Chamber of Commerce for several years and came up with the concept of a separate visitors center to promote tourism. She was active with Coronado Beautiful, which sponsored and promoted many beautification projects. She was also a mainstay of the Coronado Library, serving as president of the library board in the 1990s and as Coronado’s longtime representative to a countywide library advisory board.
Mrs. Hoppe died May 28 at her Coronado home after a long illness. She was 87.
Friends and family said Mrs. Hoppe was elegant, stylish, charming and very active in local affairs.
“She really stayed busy and involved with the community,” said longtime friend Suzanne Scribner. “She always dressed up, you never saw her in jeans. She reminded me of something out of Town & Country,” she said, referring to the national magazine that targeted an exclusive, upscale audience.
“She seemed to be involved in all aspects of Coronado civic life,” said Christian Esquevin, library director. “She supported reading, education and culture. She was very charming and friendly.”
