Small Arms Range Re-Opening
Naval Air Station North Island, Calif. — The U.S. Navy will re-open the small arms range for live fire training on Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI) tomorrow, Oct. 13. The 12-lane pistol range and a 10-lane rifle range will be used for qualify sailors in the basic use of small arms.
“The NASNI small arms range plays an important role in training Navy personnel,” said Commanding Officer of Naval Base Coronado Capt. Yancy Lindsey. “With two firing areas, a 12 lane pistol range and a 10 lane rifle range, the small arms range has the capacity to train up to 1,000 personnel each month. With this range accounting for 22 of the Navy’s 36 small arm range lanes in the metro San Diego area, it is also a vital regional asset.
A Surface Danger Zone (SDZ) for the NASNI small arms range restricts use of air, land, and sea surrounding the range when live fire training is underway. The SDZ includes a land area extending from the firing lines to the high tide line and a fan-shaped area extending over 200 acres of the Pacific Ocean. Aircraft are not allowed below 2,000 altitude over the SDZ. The ocean portion of SDZ will be open to fishing, general navigation, and training when no small arms training is scheduled. Anchoring by any vessel within the SDZ is prohibited at all times.
“We worked closely with the US Army Corps of Engineers and members of the public to understand the multi-use nature of the waters off of North Island and establish the danger zone to protect the public and military during range use,” said Capt. Lindsey
