Video: Coronado Pursuit Ends in Fiery, Fatal Crash

A carjacking in Imperial Beach led to a police pursuit and a fatal crash that involved several cars and closed Silver Strand Boulevard right in front of Strand Way between Imperial Beach and Coronado according to the California Highway Patrol.

According to San Diego County sheriff’s deputies, a pursuit began at 8th Street and Calla just before 8 a.m. Thursday with a carjacking. The pursuit lasted only five minutes but during that time, the suspect driver allegedly rammed a patrol car deputies said.

During the pursuit, the suspect vehicle – a full-sized grey Ford pickup truck – crashed in the median along Silver Strand Boulevard in front of the highrise condo buildings just south of the Hotel Del Coronado.

“The driver leaves Imperial Beach exceeding speeds of probably 80 mph, comes here to the Silver Strand weaving in and out of traffic,” said sheriff’s spokesperson Jan Caldwell. “We believe the truck hit the little red car and flipped.”

Two people died in that accident according to Caldwell. One woman was found in the driver’s seat and a man was found in the backseat of the cab.
