Last Tuesday, the Islander Boys’ Golf team hosted Poway High School for their first match of the week. Resulting in their best day of the week, Coronado had the advantage of home course, but they were not able to pull through in their final team score. Junior Javier Hernandez and freshman Jake McLaughlin were the Islanders’ lowest scorers, finishing the nine holes in 40 strokes. Freshman Easton Phillips was not far behind with 42 strokes. Poway won by a six-point margin, 207-213.

The following day, Coronado would travel to La Jolla Country Club, which proved to be “a great learning experience for the golfers on how to play difficult golf courses,” according to Coach Stuart Gordon. Phillips, Hernandez, and senior Saul Chacon each finished the course in 43 strokes, followed by McLaughlin who finished in 45. Finishing last were juniors Gino Frederick and Matt Schnappauf, each with a score of 46 strokes. “Some difficult pin positions caused putting to be a problem to those not familiar with the course,” comments Coach Gordon. La Jolla High School played their best match of the season thus far, with a collective score of 193 strokes to Coronado’s 219 strokes.

To conclude their week, the Islanders played against Torrey Pines High School, one of the best golf teams in San Diego. “[They] performed well on a very tight driving course that was a pleasure to play,” says Coach Gordon. “Undulating fast greens caused many dropped shots for our players as well as narrow fairways giving home course advantage to the opposition.” Chacon and McLaughlin handled the course well enough to finish in 42 strokes each, followed by Phillips and Hernandez who finished in 46. Torrey Pines won this match by quite a margin, resulting in 228-188 loss for Coronado.

The team currently holds a record of two wins to three losses.

Upcoming Matches:
  • Monday, March 4 vs. Francis Parker School at Riverwalk Golf Course @ 2:00 PM
  • Wednesday, March 6 vs. Point Loma High School at Balboa Golf Course @ 3:00 PM
