Former San Diego Assistant Police Chief Charles “Chuck” Kaye has been selected as Coronado’s new police chief, City Manager Blair King announced today.
Kaye, 55, worked for the San Diego Police Department from 1990 to his retirement in 2017. He was appointed San Diego’s assistant chief in 2016. In 2017, he was named captain of the San Diego State University Police Department.
Kaye, who has spent his entire career in San Diego County, was chosen from a list of eight top candidates narrowed down from a field of 63 strong, qualified candidates.
“I am very pleased that Chuck Kaye will be our next police chief,” King said. “His extensive law enforcement career with the City of San Diego, matched with his management style made him the top candidate. He understands the different policing style required for Coronado.”
The candidates were extensively screened, and the eight most highly qualified were invited to interview before separate interview panels consisting of community members, City staff and peer professionals.
Kaye has a bachelor’s degree from SDSU and a master’s degree in public administration from National University. He is an instructor at the San Diego Regional Police Academy.
Kaye will start work on October 22. His pay is $201,891 a year. Interim Police Chief Ed Aceves will continue until Kaye is on the job.
The Coronado job opened up after former Police Chief Jon Froomin announced his retirement after five years in Coronado and a 30-year career with the Foster City Police Department.
