Coronado Times wrote that my CHS 1956 classmate John Drehner is still playing tennis each week. That story triggered childhood memories of playing tennis and more. Summers in Coronado in the ’50s were in Polio Season. Children were supposed to participate in activities in which they could “keep their distance” from others. “Catching waves” at the beach, sailing to South Bay and Silver Strand State Park, paddling in Glorietta Bay and playing tennis were safe for our health. It was great fun to play tennis doubles at night across from the police station, next to the library. John kept up his tennis. He is also the only one in our class who is sure to attend any classmate’s funeral that is within driving distance. That means a lot. We can count on seeing “Drehner” each July 4th where the ’56 crowd watches the parade. We used to say we met across from Central Drug Store. John may be our only classmate without email. We just received in the mail a note from John with photos of us with other schoolmates who were at the Parade. John used a disposable camera and had the photos developed! Thank you, John. Do not ever get email or a phone that takes photos. We like it that you keep us in touch with what came before.
