Sunset Park, which overlooks North Beach, was officially reopened on Thursday, May 24, for public use.
City staff and elected leaders attended an event on Thursday, May 25, commemorating the completion of improvements. A construction fence around the park, which had been up for about six weeks, was removed the day before. Community members were already using the park.
While the sod was the most visible work at the park, the main improvement was the irrigation system upgrade. The old system caused substandard irrigation coverage and excessive watering. The improvements are expected to improve irrigation coverage, reduce water consumption by up to 20 percent.
The project also installed a new sidewalk on the Ocean Drive perimeter of the park, and a new drinking fountain. The park was fenced off for a time to allow the grass to establish roots. The improvements help make the park safer for patrons by having healthier, stronger and more even turf.
