- Third and Fourth Streets Design Improvements: A public workshop was held on Tuesday, April 24, to solicit input on the conceptual decorative lighting design and other improvements along the Third and Fourth Streets corridor. The meeting was attended by 22 residents. The first phase is expected to be a two-block segment on Fourth Street from Alameda Avenue to I Avenue. The project proposes installation of decorative street lights and banner poles, painted bulb-outs, and small hardscaped areas adjacent to intersections of avenues and alleys. The design also incorporates a blue star at the intersections. This project will have minimal impacts within the travel lanes, which should lend itself to quick approval from the California Department of Transportation.
- Coronado Entrance Improvements: Public Services is overseeing some long overdue upgrades this week on select California Department of Transportation rights of way. The City recently signed a Delegated Maintenance Agreement with Caltrans, which allows the City to work on the maintenance and grooming of certain roadways. A contractor will soon begin planting new landscaping, repairing the irrigation system, and freshening up the monument sign at the entrance to Coronado. Crews also are landscaping the small planter at northbound Glorietta Boulevard near Tidelands Park. The rendering below represents the area after several months when the new landscaping has had a chance to take root and mature.
- Coronado Flower Lady: To create an active and lively commercial corridor, the City has permitted the sale of flowers at Coronado Rotary Plaza. The City Council first issued a commercial use permit for a flower stand in Rotary Plaza in 1985. There have been three different owners. The Coronado Flower Lady stand has been updated following an accident installed at Coronado Rotary Plaza. A grand reopening is being planned by the owner. The stand was destroyed after a vehicle crashed into the plaza in November. The design of the new stand was approved by the Design Review Commission. The Coronado Flower Lady is open for business and is planning a grand reopening in early May.
- New Trash, Recycle Receptacles: Public Services will begin the first of three phases next week to install 108 new trash and recycle bins on Orange Avenue, starting at the southbound 800 block. The City and Coronado MainStreet tested the bins last year and got positive feedback from the community. No Parking signs have been set out for Tuesday, May 1, and Thursday, May 3. A contractor has been hired to remove the existing receptacles. They will be sent to EDCO for recycling. The new concrete receptacles will be delivered on a large semi truck and placed with a hydraulic crane by the contractor. The goal is to have all the receptacles in place by Memorial Day weekend. There will be 77 new trash bins and 31 new recycle bins.
