For the first time in more than 40 years a US aircraft carrier made a port visit to Vietnam on March 5th. Coronado’s own USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) left for deployment January 5th and has been operating in the Western Pacific, conducting exercises and training prior to this well deserved port call.

“The visit marks an enormously significant milestone in our bilateral relations and demonstrates U.S. support for a strong, prosperous, and independent Vietnam,” said U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Daniel Kritenbrink. “Through hard work, mutual respect, and by continuing to address the past while we work toward a better future, we have gone from former enemies to close partners.”

The Commander of all Navy forces operating in the Pacific, Adm. Scott Swift, shared similar thoughts about the bilateral relationships between the U.S. and Vietnam.

“Our nations’ relationship has reached new heights in the past few years, and USS Carl Vinson’s port visit to Vietnam is a reflection of that,” said Swift. “I am confident that engagements like this will further expand the comprehensive partnership between the United States and Vietnam.”

While on deployment, Vinson’s Captain has kept local families at home updated on their operations through numerous Facebook Posts, helping families feel connected with those forward deployed.

“This is a historic day and we are honored to receive such a warm welcome here,” said local Coronado resident, Rear Adm. John Fuller, the strike group commander, after pulling into the port.

During the port visit Sailors will experience the Vietnamese culture through tours as well as “participate in cultural and professional exchanges during community service projects, sports competitions, and receptions planned for the port call,” according to the Navy release. Another way in which they will build friendships will be through concerts performed by the U.S. 7th Fleet Band, sharing some of the American culture with the local residents.
