Coronado Girl Scout has Idea for Dog Park Location

An Open Letter to Mayor Bailey and Coronado City Council

Hello Mr. Mayor,

My name is Nevaeh Henrich and I am a Girl Scout with Coronado’s troop 5549. I am currently working on my silver award and, like my bronze award, have put my focus on the improvement of Coronado. As you know, in the past I have focused my time on bike lane issues here on the island and this year I am turning my eye towards the dog park situation. Over the past year and a half my troop and I have polled 100 residents of Coronado. We have found that the demand for a dog park is very high. However, the location of the dog park is the source of major debate. I feel the most logical place to put the dog park is where we already have an established and existing dog play area, Dog Beach. Google MapsDog beach has ample green space at the mouth of its opening and is already being utilized as a dog play area. It already has grass and would only require fencing. It also would help eliminate the amount of waste and illegal dog usage in Sunset Park. It is also separated from housing areas by a road and a park. So the smell and sound of dogs, which are already present, is not an issue for the residential community. Another area of concern was that a dog park would bring unwanted additional traffic to wherever the area it is placed. However, dog beach already receives a high traffic flow of pets and their owners. It seems logical to continue to contain pets and their owners in one area and not try to spread it out into our already limited green spaces of the island.  My solution would benefit all parties. We would be continuing to utilize a space that has already been set aside for pets and their owners, and not infringe upon our already limited green spaces on the island.

I urge you and the city council to please take my plan seriously. This is a large issue that I believe can be easily solved by teamwork and thoughtfulness.

Very respectfully,

Nevaeh Henrich
