Water Polo: CHS Girls Play Four Game Tournament in Newport Beach

Girls' Water Polo

The Islander girls’ water polo team headed to Newport Beach for their final tournament of 2017. On Friday, Coronado played two games; against Newport Beach and Foothill High Schools. The first against Newport was a tight game that went into overtime. Ryan Sund had been dominating on the offense throughout the entire game and scored the winning goal during overtime, winning 11-10. Sund and Sheila Tomlin both led the team in goals, each scoring four. The second game on Friday was played against Foothill. Although the final score was 2-15, in favor of Foothill, goalkeepers Isabel Zaller and Ella Farley have been blocking exceptionally, preventing further scoring from their opponents.

The following day, Coronado played their third game of the tournament against Santa Barbara High School. Offensively, Tomlin and Abby Sylvester each scored three goals, while Zaller and Farley collectively saved ten goals. Unfortunately, Coronado came up short 6-8. The last game of the tournament was played against Los Osos High School, resulting in a win for Coronado. By the end of the fourth quarter, the score was 10-10 and so it went into overtime. Sylvester and Tomlin gave Coronado the victory scoring three goals collectively, while Reese Oliver led the team on offense with four total goals. Farley, a freshman, played the entire game as goalkeeper and had ten blocks. The final score against Los Osos was 13-11.

Last Thursday, the team went to Bishops for a league match. Once again, Tomlin and Sund dominated on offense, being the top scorers, while Farley maintained Coronado’s defense with ten blocks. Bishop’s came out the winner in a close game at 6-7.

The girls’ team record is now four wins to seven losses.
