This past Saturday at Morley Field, both boys’ and girls’ cross country teams competed in the Division-IV races for a chance to qualify in the state meet. The last time the boys’ team qualified was back in 2007, while only two girls qualified as individuals. The last time both teams qualified was in 1995, but the runners on this year’s team have managed pull through to break that streak.
The girls’ team placed second of the eleven teams racing in Division IV behind Sage Creek High School, who had five runners place in the top ten. Teresa Perez placed second overall in the 2.96-mile course, finishing in 18:36 (Mile Pace: 6:18). In eighth place, Madden Hundley, with a time of 19:37 (Mile Pace: 6:38), secured another spot for Coronado among the top ten finishers. She was followed by Sofia Van Arsdale in fourteenth place, clocking 20:31 (Mile Pace: 6:56), and then by Naya Tamariz in sixteenth, clocking 20:40 (Mile Pace: 6:59). Abigail Hundley and Natalya Gomez also finished in the Division-IV race, qualifying for the state meet.
In the boys’ race, Spencer Busby took fifth place overall, with a time of 16:21 (Mile Pace: 5:32). Ian Hurlburt then finished in 16:41 (Mile Pace: 5:38), placing twelfth. In eighteenth place, Patrick Harris clocked 16:50 (Mile Pace: 5:41), followed by Luke Klingenberg, who finished in 17:06 (Mile Pace: 5:47). Cole Mullins finished five places behind Luke, with a time of 17:21 (Mile Pace: 5:52). Other finishers from Coronado were Cole Nichols and Casey Harris. The Coronado boys finished in third place behind Sage Creek and Crawford.
Spencer Busby, Teresa Perez, and Madden Hundley received All-Western League honors for placing among the top ten in their races. Congratulations to the varsity cross country teams and Coach George Green for their hard work in qualifying for the state meet this Saturday.
