Council to Discuss Accessory Dwelling Units Rules

City of Coronado logoHere’s what the Coronado City Council will be discussing at its meeting on Tuesday, November 7, 2017.

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU) Ordinance amendments: When the ordinance was adopted on October 3, 2017, the council voted to have provisions brought back for further discussion: owner occupancy requirements, transient rental limitations and how much to charge owners for hooking up an ADU to the city’s wastewater system. These provisions will be fleshed out on Tuesday.

South Beach Restrooms: Now that the California Coastal Commission has rejected Coronado’s application to build restrooms on South Beach, the city council must decide what to do with the $529 thousand left over from the project. The council can return the unspent balance to the general fund or use the money to upgrade the portable restroom trailer at Avenida del Sol. The trailer was intended as a temporary facility that would be moved after the South Beach restroom was built.

Editor’s Note: The City Manager noted last week that the Portable Restroom at South Beach, at the end of Avenida del Sol, is out of order and has been closed. Staff is working to identify the issue. As soon as the problem is identified, staff will estimate the time it will take to make repairs and provide the information to the public. Portable restroom units have been placed at the site.

Bridge Lights: The city Cultural Arts Commission asked the city council to endorse the San Diego Port Authority’s “Illuminate the Bay” project.  Plans call for dramatic LED light shows to span across the San Diego-Coronado Bridge after night falls. The $10 million project is being funded by donations to the Port of San Diego. No public money will be used. Thus far the port has raised $1.2 million. The installation is expected to be completed by the bridge’s 50th anniversary in 2019. This would not be the first illuminated bridge in California; the Bay Bridge in San Francisco had lighting installed in 2011 to celebrate that bridge’s 75th anniversary.

Additional Items of Interest:

Approve placing a council member salary adjustment initiative on the November 2018 ballot.

Request Community Development Block Grants from the County of San Diego. The funds would be used for architectural and accessibility improvements.

Appointments to the Bicycle Advisory Committee and the Street Tree Committee.
