  • Silver Strand Traffic:  Traffic volumes have been exceptionally heavy along the Silver Strand this week. On Wednesday, there were several accidents but, for the most part, traffic is heavy on both Interstates 5 and 805, which causes some people to cut through Coronado. The City recently took control of four intersections along state Route 75 from Naval Amphibious Base Coronado and City Hall from the California Department of Transportation with the goal of installing smart traffic signals to improve traffic flow. The signals at the intersections work together to ensure better syncing. The signals are installed and working. Traffic has improved. In fact, while there was a long back up south of Leyte Road, the Tarawa Road signals were functioning well and traffic was flowing in front of the naval base (see images below). Staff continues to regularly monitor the intersections but asks that residents be aware of morning conditions that affect traffic, such as signing up for a Coronado Police Department Nixle account and planning their trips accordingly.
  • Parking Meter HolidaysThe City Council approved free but limited-time parking in all commercial zones from Monday, December 4, through Monday, December 25, 2017. The free parking, which has been approved annually by the City Council, provides visitors and residents with two hours of free parking to encourage local holiday shopping. Take care in reading the parking restrictions as time limits will apply and be enforced. The City’s new parking meters will be programmed to allow free parking but will indicate a violation when the time allocated for free parking had expired. The meters will not be covered this year.
  • Golf Course Food, Beverage Concessionaire: The City seeks a new Golf Course food and beverage concessionaire. The current contract ends in August 2018 and the City has decided against extending the agreement this time, which has been under operations since 1998. The process to select a food and beverage concessionaire will take approximately six months to complete.
  • Village Theatre Celebrates 70 YearsThe community is invited to celebrate the Village Theatre’s 70th anniversary on October 25 at 5 p.m. The Coronado Island Film Festival’s Classic Movie Series will present a special screening of Steven Spielberg’s “Back to the Future.” Marty McFly, the17-year-old high school student, is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his friend, the maverick scientist Doc Brown. Tickets are on sale at the theatre box office for $5.
