The CHS Varsity Girls’ Tennis team faced three challenging opponents last week with consecutive matches. All three matches resulted in victories for Coronado.
On Tuesday, the team played Francis Parker at the San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club. Singles players, Summer Vu and Hannah Quirk, were playing in high performance mode, winning four total sets at 6-0. Samantha Russell, a sophomore, subbed in to play the Line 2 Singles player for Francis Parker, also dominating the set at 6-0. The final score was 14-4.
Wednesday’s match proved challenging to the team as they played San Dieguito Academy in Encinitas. The Line 3 Doubles Team for Coronado, Ellie Johnson and Marla Steel, pleasantly surprised Coach Moore with their compatibility, winning two of their three matches and improving after each one. Tiana French also had a noteworthy win against the Line 2 Singles player, Coach Rob commented. In sets, the teams tied at 9-9, but the tiebreaker went to Coronado. This was determined by a 15-game margin within the set scores.
Finally, Coronado hosted Poway High School for their third match of the week. “Without question, it’s the best this team has played this season and we came right out firing on all sides,” says Coach Moore. In the first two lines of the match, the team had a winning streak of twelve sets before players were substituted in for the third line. Regarding key performances, Coach Moore says, “I was impressed with the way Olivia Strong and Lily Vu played at Line 3 doubles as well as my singles players, Summer, Hannah and Tiana, who gave up only three games in eight sets!” Coronado went on to beat Poway 16-2.
The team keeps a record of four wins to no losses.
