  • Bridge Lane Test OK’d: The City is pleased to announce that the California Department ofTransportation has agreed to a three-month test of reconfigured weekend travel lanes on the San Diego-Coronado Bridge that should ease traffic in town. The test will begin on Saturday, July 1. The City Council recently requested that the current weekend configuration be the same as the weekday configuration to avoid traffic impacts from crowds that visit the City on weekends. The City made the same request to the state last year. The test will allow three lanes heading into Coronado and two lanes heading out in the morning, and two lanes heading into Coronado and three lanes heading out in the afternoon. The City appreciates the timely response as it gears up for the Fourth of July and the busy summer months ahead. Coronado is confident it will result in a significant improvement to bridge traffic. A final decision will be made following an evaluation of traffic during the test period.

  • Workshop to Focus on Bike, Pedestrian Improvements:  A public workshop set for Monday, June 19, is a continuation of the City’s ongoing efforts to develop a community consensus for transportation improvements that will make it safer for bicyclists and pedestrians. The community is encouraged to attend and get involved. This is the second of three planned workshops. It will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Library’s Winn Room. The City is working with an ad-hoc committee and the community to develop an Active Transportation Master Plan to include these proposed improvements as traffic volumes in Coronado continue to increase. The open-house workshop will allow attendees to drop by anytime during the evening to provide their input, learn about the Master Plan and talk to City staff and the project team. Light refreshments will be served. Visit the Active Transportation page to review workshop materials, learn about other recent activity and sign up to receive emails about new developments.

  • South Embarcadero Performance Project: The San Diego Unified Port District has released its Draft Environmental Impact Report for the Bayside Performance Park Enhancement Project and Port Master Plan Amendment. The project is a proposed 3.47-acre permanent performance and event venue in Embarcadero Marina Park South in San Diego that would include a covered stage with 4,500 square feet of performance space. Construction is anticipated to take 10 months. The Draft EIR is available for a minimum 45‐day public review period ending at 5 p.m. on Monday, July 31. The Draft EIR is available online. The Bayside Performance Park has been designed as the summer home of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra and other artists and events. In the past, the community has expressed concern about the noise from the venue. The City is reviewing the study, particularly as it relates to impacts on residents, including noise, aesthetics and visual resources. • Bayside Venue MapFourth of July Events:  Coronado is gearing up for the City’s annual celebration of the Fourth of July, which is a little more than two weeks away. The holiday this year falls on a Tuesday and the City expects big crowds at the beach and at many of the day’s planned activities. The two largest events on July 4 are the Fourth of July parade at 10 a.m. along Orange Avenue, from First Street to Churchill Place, and the Fourth of July Fireworks Show over Glorietta Bay at 9 p.m. In between, there are many other activities, including a 12K Run and 5K Run-Walk; a rough-water swim; a community concert; and a parachute demonstration in Glorietta Bay. Check out this list of frequently asked questions put together by the Coronado Police Department on parking restrictions, parade and traffic information online. Due to technical difficulties last year, the Fourth of July Parade was not aired live on Coronado TV as it has in years’ past. A taped version was edited and shown. The City is getting new equipment to allow for the live broadcast on Spectrum 19 and AT&T 99.
