Highlights from the City Manager’s Weekly Update: City’s Portable Restroom Operating at South Beach

Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.

Beach Permit Reminder

As schools let out for the summer, Coronado has begun seeing an increase in the number of large groups on the beach without a required permit. Coronado would like to remind schools and other organizations that while all groups are welcome to come to the beach or parks at any time during the year, the City has a few simple rules we ask larger groups to follow. The rules allow everyone to enjoy the beach and remain safe. It is important that City staff and Lifeguards are aware of large groups so there is no conflict in an area that may already be assigned to another group and so that staffing adjustments can be made. All organized use of parks and beaches by a group of more than 25 people, or that will use a jump house or other activity center, requires a permit. Group leaders should contact the Recreation Department at (619) 522-2454 for more information.

Coffee Vendor Selected

After receiving five bids to operate the City’s coffee cart concession in front of the Coronado Public Library, the City has selected Higher Grounds Enterprises as the operator. The City owns the cart, which is currently receiving some minor upgrades and repairs. Under the terms of the agreement, Higher Grounds will run the coffee cart for an initial one-year period, with four one-year extensions, and will operate Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 12:30 to 5 p.m. The coffee cart is expected to open by early July.

Supervisor Cox Provides Needed Grants

San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox has awarded Coronado two grants – one for activities related to the City’s 125th anniversary and one for the rehabilitation of the decayed or nonexistent fence at Silver Strand State Beach. The first grant is for $25,000 and will go toward a San Diego Symphony concert, one of a number of events planned to celebrate Coronado’s 125th birthday. The second grant is for $50,000 and it will pay for new fencing at the State Beach across from the Coronado Cays. The City and State Parks are in discussion on the design of a replacement fence. The City of Coronado thanks Supervisor Cox for his generosity for these two important grants.

Notification Testing Process

The U.S. Navy has a detailed and extensive protocol to notify local public safety officials and the City Manager in the event of an emergency. A drill of the notification procedure will be conducted this week. Everyone is thankful the drill will occur during the day and not at night.

Portable Restroom

Two of the stalls in the portable restroom at South Beach are now operable and the restroom has been reopened. City crews continue to work on having all stalls operating as soon as possible. The City thanks the community for its patience. Crews have found various items placed in the stalls, such as children’s toys, that the City has had to dislodge.

Suspected Intoxicated Combatant Arrested

On the morning of Monday, June 15, the Coronado Police Department received a call about a man lying on the ground at Fourth Street and Orange Avenue. An officer attempted to wake the unresponsive subject. After several attempts, the man finally woke up and stumbled to his feet. He then began to physically attack the officer after the officer asked him for his personal information. A Navy petty officer assigned to the USS Carl Vinson witnessed the incident and ran to the officer’s aid until additional police officers arrived. The police officer was transported to a San Diego area hospital with minor injuries. The subject, a San Diego resident, was arrested on charges of being drunk in public, battery on a peace officer and resisting arrest.
