Highlights from the City Manager’s Weekly Update: Man Arrested in Connection with Coronado Stabbing

Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.

Caltrans Speed Study Third/Fourth Street Speed Limits

At the June 2 City Council meeting, the California Department of Transportation is set to present the results of its recently finalized speed study for State Routes 282 and 75, or Third and Fourth streets. Caltrans is required to set speed limits according to the results of engineering and traffic studies. As a result of its speed studies, Caltrans has agreed to maintain the current speed limit of 25 mph for the sections of Third and Fourth west of Orange Avenue and to increase the speed limit by 5 mph to 30 mph for the sections of Third and Fourth east of Orange. Although the City Council does not have a role in setting speeds on the state highway, Caltrans has agreed to present the results of their traffic studies to the Council at the public meeting.

Workshop No. 2 for Coronado Gateway

The second community workshop for the Coronado Gateway project is scheduled for Thursday, June 4, at the Community Center Nautilus Room, 1845 Strand Way. The workshop will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. The City and the company helping to redesign the entrance to Coronado would like more input on the project. Bike to Work Day Reminder

Bike to Work Day events, such as a Pit Stop at the Coronado Ferry Landing, were postponed county-wide due to rain last week and are set to go on as planned next Friday, May 29. The City encourages Coronado employers, residents and commuters to ride their bikes throughout Bike to Work Week, May 11 to 15, and the year. Learn more about National Bike Month at SANDAG’s iCommute Bike Month Page.

Noise Alert

Navy aircraft training in the region is ongoing through May 29. Navy officials say citizens can expect to hear increased jet operations day and night. More details can be found in this Navy notice.

Shuttle Bus Reminder

The successful Coronado Summer Shuttle program is set to return Sunday, June 7, this year offering an increase to the free bus service frequency around the Village area through September 13. The City Council agreed to fund the program as a way to reduce vehicle trips along the Orange Avenue business district during the peak summer season. With a generous donation from the Coronado Tourism Improvement District, the shuttle buses will be wrapped with special graphics, which distinguishes the service from other bus service and welcomes passengers. The increased frequency, from 30-minute intervals to 20-minute intervals, ensures riders wait no longer than 20 minutes at any time for a shuttle. Special bus tickets will be available to Cays residents who would like to attend the Summer Concerts and the City’s planned Fourth of July events. See the Cays Homeowners Association Office for details.

Creatures Washing Ashore are Harmless

Lately there have been hundreds of small sea creatures washing up on Coronado’s beach and naturally curious people have been asking the Lifeguards many questions about them. Every few years, Lifeguards see several hundred or even thousands of these creatures. Their common name is sea raft or by-the-wind sailors. They are of the species Velella velella and related to the Portuguese man o’ war. They live on the open ocean surface and are pushed by the winds. The toxins they use to catch prey is basically harmless to humans unless contact was made with a very sensitive body part such as the face or eyes. It is recommended to avoid touching the face or eyes after contacting one of these creatures. Here is a link to a Wikipedia page and a video to learn more about these creatures.

Stabbing Arrest

On Tuesday afternoon, a 20-year old male walked into Sharp Coronado Hospital with multiple stab wounds. The man was transported to a San Diego trauma center. Patrol officers learned that the stabbing may have occurred at a nearby apartment complex. Officers went to the nearest apartment building where they noticed blood on the sidewalk. The trail led officers to an apartment, where they found three men. All three were taken to the Coronado Police Station for questioning. One, a 19-year-old, was booked into County Jail for committing the stabbing and was charged with assault with a deadly weapon. The other two were released without charge. The stabbing victim’s injuries are non-life threatening. He is expected to recover. The investigation is continuing.

San Diego CrimeStoppers Awards Luncheon

The 2015 annual Enough is Enough Crime Stoppers luncheon was held on Wednesday, May 20. Nominees from regional law enforcement agencies were honored for their exceptional policing efforts. Det. Jason Hurley is Coronado’s 2015 awardee and is being recognized for his work with the remotely monitored bicycle program in 2014. Not only did he maintain the tracking and bicycle equipment, trained all sworn and Dispatch personnel on program procedures and upgraded the devices and equipment as needed, he also coordinated with the San Diego District Attorney’s Office to have one District Attorney assigned to most of Coronado’s bicycle theft cases. This has greatly assisted with successful prosecutions. The remotely monitored bicycle program has been a huge success with nearly two dozen arrests in the first six months.
