Highlights from the City Manager’s Weekly Update: Nighttime Sewer Main Work to begin next week

Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.

Nighttime Sewer Main Work

The City is advising the community that night work will be required on a sewer replacement project set to begin April 6 on certain alleys and roadways in the Village. Because some of the construction sites include Third and Fourth streets, both of which fall in the State’s right of way, the California Department of Transportation requires that the work is done at night to help reduce traffic impacts on state highways due to lane closures. Work on Third will take place from 6 p.m. to midnight; work on Fourth, from 7 p.m. to midnight. The project involves excavating and removing the existing concrete alley and street surfaces, replacing the sewer main lines that run under them, and resurfacing the roads. The contractor has 75 working days to complete the project. Affected residents will receive notices 72 hours in advance of any work on adjacent roadways. The City appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation. For more information, call the City at (619) 522-7383 or the contractor (951) 453-8946. Check this report for weekly updates on the project. For more detailed information, see this press release. Locations scheduled for construction are:

1. Alley between D and E avenues from Second to Fourth streets.
2. Alley between Orange and D avenues from Second to Third streets.
3. Miguel Avenue from Pomona to San Luis Rey avenues.

Summer Shuttle Interior Ads

Coronado’s popular Free Summer Shuttle will once again offer interior bus advertising space to local Coronado businesses and groups advertising local events. The bus ads are a proven opportunity to promote a business or organization’s events and services. There are 15 available spaces per bus and three buses that will run from June 7 to September 13, 2015, so space is limited. This exposes the ads to an estimated 1,000 riders per day, a mix of residents and tourists. Ads must promote Coronado tourism and the community. The ads will cost $125 per month per ad per bus for for-profit organizations and businesses and a reduced cost of $75 for nonprofit groups. Reservations will be accepted starting April 1. Watch out for a press release and specifications sheet/order form for full pricing information and other details on Monday, March 30. For more information or to place an ad, email [email protected] or call (619) 522-7340.

Ash Cans Removed

The final ash cans have been removed from along Orange Avenue and at the Community Center and City Hall as Coronado moves into its second year of being a smoke-free city. The public ash cans were retained out of concern that smokers, who were trying to comply with the law and extinguish their cigarettes, would not have the proper receptacles. No complaints were received and no significant increase in cigarette butt litter from the initial 50 percent reduction of ash cans more than two months ago has been detected. The one area of concern is in front of Lamb’s Players Theatre. An ash can there is still heavily used by theatre patrons during intermission. City staff will keep an eye on the area to ensure it is not unsightly once we remove the can.

Request for Port Funds

Coronado has made a significant request to the San Diego Unified Port District, which will mostly be used in support of the City’s 125th Anniversary. The requested $125,000 will pay for a free San Diego Symphony concert in Tidelands Park in recognition of this significant milestone in the City’s history but also for the City’s annual Snow Mountain event, which the Port normally funds, as well as a few other activities. The City usually requests $25,000 per year, which is far less than what the other four Port cities routinely receive. The City hopes that the Port understands the significance of its one-time request. Public comments will be accepted at a meeting on the request set for Friday, April 3, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Training Room at the Port’s Administration Building, 3165 Pacific Highway, San Diego.

Navy Noise Alert

The Navy soon will be conducting flight operations and related training off the coast of Southern California. There is expected to be an increase in jet traffic into and out of Naval Air Station North Island during the next month. Coronado residents can expect to hear increased jet noise during this training. The Navy relays that it makes every effort to reduce noise whenever possible. Noise complaints can be directed to (619) 545-8233.

Design Review Commission

On Wednesday, March 25, the Design Review Commission approved a new sign for Haggen at 150 B Ave., a new sign for Christian Rice Architects at 1127 Loma Ave. and approved revisions to the design for a duplex at 732 and 734 Olive Ave.

Drug Store Presentation

On Tuesday, March 24, several Coronado Police Officers collaborated with Coronado SAFE, the Coronado Unified School District and other local partners to present the Drug Store Program for sixth grade students from Coronado Middle School, Sacred Heart and Christ Church schools. The program is a very realistic set of scenarios aimed to teach youth the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and the likely results of engaging in drug usage. The program includes mock arrests, a court trial, counseling, death and a funeral. It is a very moving program for the students and for the officers participating. In addition to the scenes, additional activity stations are presented, including officers showing the effects of alcohol, using “drunk goggles.”
