February 4, 2015, marked the second National Letter of Intent signing day for a number of NCAA sports. Student athletes from all over San Diego gathered at the Hall Of Champions in Balboa Park to sign to their respective universities. In addition to the four students that signed in the Fall, Coronado High School boasts five more students committing to attend college and play sports at the college level: Tyler Gilmore, Madison Smith, Maxwell Mckee, Michael Rodriguez, and Sam McPeak.
Tyler Gilmore is excited to be heading to Poughkeepsie, New York in the fall to play soccer for Vassar College. Tyler chose Vassar College because it has a great combination of soccer, academics, and musical possibilities. Tyler said, “I am looking forward to the intensity of soccer at the next level.”
Madison Smith will play soccer at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. Madison chose Denison University because the beautiful campus is accompanied by a small town feeling. She does not know what her academic focus will be yet. Madison is looking forward to “being able to travel with the team and having the chance to continue playing soccer.”
Maxwell Mckee will be attending Willamette University in Salem, Oregon to play soccer. He chose Willamette because the student body is tight knit and welcoming; the classes and curriculum the university offers correlates well with Maxwell’s interests. Additionally, the class sizes are small which will allow for more opportunity for one-on-one with the professors. Maxwell is looking forward to playing soccer in college because, ” I have been so lucky to have the chance to play with and befriend such amazing teammates in high school, I couldn’t see myself not pursuing the same experience in college.”
Michael Rodriguez accepted an offer to attend the United States Merchant Marine Academy, where he will be playing lacrosse. USMMA is located in King Point, NY. Upon graduation he will have a BS degree and the option of pursuing a career in the maritime industry or to be commissioned as an Officer in any branch of the armed services. Michael is “looking forward to the new friendships I will make and to facing new competition”.
Sam McPeak also committed to Denison University. He will be playing lacrosse. Sam chose Denison because the Lacrosse program has a twenty-year history of success and the players on the team couldn’t have been more welcoming. Along with a great lacrosse program the school also offers outstanding academics. Sam noted that Denison lacrosse attracts players from many different regions. He is looking forward to, ” banding together with different guys on the team from all walks of life.”
