The Imitation Game tells the story of British mathematician and cryptographer Alan Turning, whose work for the British government during World War II is widely credited with hastening the end of the war, saving countless lives, and advancing the concept of theoretical computing. Despite some criticism regarding the film’s purported inaccuracies, the film is a smart, entertaining thrill ride that will introduce a new generation of viewers to Turing’s contributions.
The strong cast includes many faces that will be familiar to television and film fans; in addition to Benedict Cumberbatch (who plays the title character on PBS’s Sherlock) as Turing, the film also stars Kiera Knightly, Allen Leech (Downton Abbey‘s Tom Branson), and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones‘s Tywin Lannister). Fellow theatergoer Stephanie thought the movie was “well cast and very well acted.” Indeed, the film earned Golden Globe nominations for two of its stars, Cumberbatch and Knightly.
Although much of the film’s central drama is resolved predictably (most theatergoers are likely to know the outcome of WWII), The Imitation Game develops several subplots related to the personal lives of the characters that add suspense for viewers. These themes, which include Turing’s homosexuality (which was prohibited under British law at the time) and the challenges faced by Turing’s female collaborator Joan Clarke (Knightly) as she pursued a career in the male-dominated field.
Overall, the film is engaging, clever, and likely to be enjoyed by theatergoers interested in history, biopics, or simply quality, thought-proving films.
