Highlights from the City Manager’s Weekly Update: Illegal Lodging Plea from Homeless Resident

Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.

Public Safety Teams Deliver at Christmas

Here’s how the Fire and Police departments volunteer during the holidays to make the holidays brighter for everyone.

  • Santa Claus Deliveries – The Coronado Fire Department is set to make Christmas Eve deliveries to Coronado children’s homes on December 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. Parents and guardians must bring the gift labeled with the child’s name and address to the Main Fire Department, 1001 Sixth St., weekdays from Monday, December 8, to 4 p.m. on Friday, December 22. Please bring a new, unwrapped gift for a child in need, which will be donated through Father Joe’s Villages. See flyer below for more information.
  • Teddy Bear Drive – Those still wanting to donate a new stuffed animal for the annual Law Enforcement Teddy Bear Drive have until Monday to drop items off at the Police Department, 700 Orange Ave. The stuffed animals are for Rady Children’s Hospital. They will be delivered via caravan on Tuesday, December 9. In addition to the Police Department, donation bins can be found at the Community Center and participating Coronado grocery stores, pharmacies and restaurants. Contact Officer Sam Sellers at (619) 522-7350 or [email protected] for more information.
  • Shop with a Cop – Coronado Police will participate in the 21st annual Shop with a Cop event tomorrow, December 6. More than 300 officers from local, state and federal law enforcement agencies participate. Officers volunteer their time and money to host underprivileged children for a breakfast and show at Sea World. They caravan to Target for a morning of shopping where each child is provided with a $150 Target gift card.

Storm Update

Here’s an update following recent storms that brought record rains to the area.

  • There was no notable damage from the storms. Two Public Services crews worked about 50 hours of overtime during the major part of the storms to monitor and maintain vigilance over the City. No major flooding was experienced. Crews monitored storm drain diverters to ensure that debris, such as tree limbs and surface oils, were separated from the rain water that ends up in our bay and ocean.
  • Rain did cause problems with the holiday lighting on Christmas trees along Orange Avenue and also at Coronado Rotary Park. The City’s electrician is working on the ground fault indicators that are getting wet and not resetting. He said the lights should be working for tonight’s Holiday Open House. Residents may notice the Christmas tree lights in the Orange Avenue medians have been on during the day. This has helped keep the lights working despite the rain. At Coronado Rotary Park, rain knocked out two light bulbs in the star at the top of the tree. The City was able to arrange for the replacement of the bulbs. Meanwhile this week, Public Services crews planted Poinsettias along Orange Avenue in time for tonight’s Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade and Holiday Open House.
  • Public Services made sandbags available to residents during the storms. As the winter storm season approaches, the City reminds residents to be prepared for flooding. During rain events, sandbags can be picked up from various locations in town: First Street and Alameda Boulevard; Fourth Street and Alameda; and at North Beach.

Loading Zones Delineation

A notice will be sent to affected residents and businesses that alley marking will be completed next week between B and Adella avenues. The City will be adding striping and installing signs to create two new commercial loading zones for the exclusive and restricted use of delivery vehicles in the alley near El Cordova Hotel and the Oxford Condominiums. The loading zones will be on the west side of the alley, across from the Oxford Condominiums, and are expected to improve and maintain garage and alley access for all users. Business owners are encouraged to inform their delivery people to use the loading zones. If you have any questions, please call Engineering at (619) 522-7313.

Illegal Lodging Plea

A chronic homeless person, who had been residing in the Orange Avenue corridor, recently pleaded guilty to multiple cases of illegal lodging. The plea agreement included a stay away order for most of the downtown Orange Avenue area, except to patronize businesses. To date, he has not returned to Coronado.

New Trash Receptacles

Public Services is testing new trash bins on the northwest corner of Orange Avenue at Tenth Street. The bins are dark green and were installed last week. Public Services crews will observe the use of the receptacles from a maintenance and functionality standpoint, servicing them daily for the test period. The bins have a 45-gallon capacity, which is larger than the existing bins. They will remain in place for up to two months.
