Coronado boy attends Naval Academy homecoming with late father’s football teammates

Tanner Zellem was 13 months old when his father died. Now 11, Tanner is curious about his dad’s time at the academy — as a midshipman and football player.

He’s going to learn a lot more at Saturday’s Homecoming game. Tanner flew from San Diego to attend the game and tailgate with his dad’s academy friends, courtesy of the Navy Football Brotherhood.

“It’s a special opportunity for all of us to do this in memory of Scott,” said Schenk, the driving force behind the football brotherhood, which has nearly 1,200 members worldwide and supports the families of fallen teammates.
