1 Billion Hindus Celebrate Deepavali, The Festival of Lights, THIS WEDNESDAY

For Hindus, Deepavali (Diwali) is one of the most important festivals of the year and is celebrated in families by performing traditional activities together in their homes.

The name “Diwali” is a contraction of “Deepavali”, which translates into “row of lamps”. Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil. During Diwali, all the celebrants wear new clothes and share sweets and snacks with family members and friends.

This past Sunday, there was a Diwali celebration in Balboa Park that was open to the public. There were booths from each State in India depicting how they celebrate Diwali differently than the rest within India. Mostly it was filled with dance, fun, and food…how can you go wrong with that!

The story of Diwali is derived from the Ramayana – a story of demons, royalty, and warriors. For more information on the story click here.

For more celebrations, there is another Diwali festival off Black Mountain Road this Saturday, October 29. Attached is the flier for more dancing, lights, fireworks, and food!
