The Agency for Jewish Education will end its 2009-10 Coronado lecture series this month with Professor Ghada Osman. Osman’s lecture will take place in the Winn Room of the Coronado Library (640 Orange Avenue, Coronado) on April 21 at 10:30 am. Her lecture is titled, “A Comparison of Islam and Judaism.”
As a monotheistic faith that originated in the Middle East, Islam, the second largest religion in the world, holds many beliefs and practices in common with Judaism. Judaism and Islam – as well as Christianity – are known as “Abrahamic faiths,” as they trace their history to the belief in a covenant God made with Abraham. This course examines some of the roots and elements that Islam shares with Judaism, as well as some of the major differences between the faiths. It also explores a few of the past interactions between the two religions.
Ghada Osman is Associate Professor of Arabic Studies at SDSU. She is Chair of the Department of Linguistics & Asian/ Middle Eastern Languages, and the Director of the Center for Islamic & Arabic Studies. She holds a Ph.D. in Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University, and an M.A. in Islamic Studies from UCLA. Her primary area of research is Medieval Arabic and Islam, with a secondary area of research in Arabic and Islam in the U.S. today. She frequently gives public lectures on various aspects of Islam and Muslim Societies around San Diego County.
The Mandelbaum Family Lecture Series is a program of the Agency for Jewish Education and is free and open to the public.
