CORONADO – Not only did he survive the attack on Pearl Harbor, but the oldest living medal of honor recipient is now 100-years-old. Lieutenant John Finn, retired U.S. Navy, celebrated his 100th birthday at Naval Air Station North Island this weekend. On December 7th, 1941 Finn displayed extraordinary heroism when the Japanese attacked Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, about five minutes before they attacked Pearl Harbor. Exposed to heavy enemy fire, the 32-year old Chief Petty Officer vigorously fought back with a 50 caliber machine gun. The Navy says Finn shot down at least one enemy plane, but maybe as many as five. Despite 27 injuries, Finn continued to fight until he was ordered to seek medical attention. Even though Finn suffered from great pain, he returned to the squadron area to supervise the rearming of the returning planes. Read the entire San Diego 6 article here.
