It’s rare to see protesters on Coronado, but today, Carpenters Local 1506 is protesting on the sidewalk in front of Coronado First Bank at 801 Orange Avenue. eCoronado.com picked up a flier that was being distributed by the protesters. It read: “Shame on Coronado 1st Bank for contributing to erosion of area standards for local carpenter craft workers. Carpenters Local 1506 has a labor dispute with E F Brady/San Diego, a contractor that performed work at Coronado 1st Bank’s new branch. E F Brady/San Diego does not meet area labor standards, including providing or fully paying for family health care and pension for all of its carpenter craft employees.” “Carpenters Local 1506 believes that Coronado 1st Bank has an obligation to the community to do all it can to see that area labor standards are met for construction on their new branch.” Call Carpenters Local 1506 at (858) 621-2670 for further information. eCoronado.com contacted Coronado First Bank and spoke with Bruce Ives, the president, chief executive officer and a director of Coronado First Bank. Mr. Ives stated: “Coronado First Bank is opening an office in downtown San Diego and hired San Diego Office Interiors as general contractor. San Diego Office Interiors hired a non-union sub-contractor and that is what is the cause of the protest.” Basically, Carpenters Local 1506 is protesting the use of a non-union sub-contractor for this project versus union contractors. No laws were broken. Mr. Ives added that the new bank is completed and will open in July 2009.
