Dr. Seuss Sculpture Garden is Open (Hotel del Coronado)

The Chase Group, publisher for the art of Dr. Seuss, will unveil the collection on The Del’s Windsor Lawn on Saturday, April 25. It will remain open for public viewing through May 20, before moving to prominent locations around the world.

NEWS RELEASE DR. SEUSS TOURING SCULPTURE GARDEN DEBUTS AT THE HOTEL DEL CORONADO Coronado, CA — Hotel del Coronado will be the site for the inaugural show of the Dr. Seuss Touring Sculpture Garden in celebration of Theodore Seuss Geisel and the dynamic collection of books and characters created during his 54-year career. For the first time in history, bronze sculptures from the Art of Dr. Seuss Collection are being placed in public and private collections as enduring tributes to Seuss’ prominent messages and ingeniously inspired nonsense. The exhibit features six 5-to-8 foot sculptures of characters from The Lorax, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Yertle the Turtle, Green Eggs and Ham and The Cat in the Hat. The Lorax, first published in 1971, chronicles the plight of the environment and the Lorax, a mossy, bossy creature who “speaks for the trees” … and this nearly 40 years before the majority of us became concerned. A master of word and rhyme, Geisel’s genius was making reading a joy, all the while teaching lessons like self-determination, tolerance and conservation, universal ideas that would win over the hearts of youngsters everywhere. Those viewing the sculptures have the opportunity to make a pledge to “go green” in their own personal way. The Grinch, Geisel’s ‘alter ego’ offers the wonderful message that “…it’s not how you start out that counts. It’s what you are at the finish.” Yertle the Turtle, a cautionary tale about democracy and “doing the right thing” is as useful a teaching tool today as it was when penned over 50 years ago. Green Eggs and Ham, the fourth best-selling English language children’s book of all time, was born out of a $50 wager that Geisel couldn’t write an entertaining book using only 50 words. And, the classic The Cat in the Hat, the defining book of Geisel’s career, changed the way that generations of children learned to read. While his most prominent legacy is in children’s literacy, his artistic legacy continues to cross over generations and genres, while singularly impacting the worlds of art, literature, pop and high culture. A long-time resident of La Jolla, San Diego was near and dear to Geisel’s heart. In fact, The Del was the site for a celebration in honor of his 100th birthday in 2003, where a limited-edition print of his original painting titled “I Dreamed I Was A Doorman at the Hotel del Coronado” was unveiled. The Chase Group, publisher for the art of Dr. Seuss, will unveil the collection on The Del’s Windsor Lawn on Saturday, April 25. It will remain open for public viewing through May 20, before moving to prominent locations around the world. ### Founded in 1992, KSL Resorts manages six time-honored resorts with outstanding recreational amenities, including spa, golf, tennis and ski.
