Gunshot Victim Taken to Sharp Coronado from Over the Bridge Dies

update: 4/24/18 4:00 PM The identity of the victim of last nights homicide has been released as 17-year-old Fernando Rosas-Sanchez.

San Diego Police Department received a call from Coronado Police at about 7:30 pm Monday night reporting that someone had been brought to the Sharp Coronado Hospital Emergency with gunshot wounds to his upper body. The victim did not survive. The two people who drove the victim from over the bridge, in the black Toyota Camry belonging to a family member, were being questioned by police.

The deceased is a 17-year-old Hispanic male. The shooting happened in the Mountain View area of San Diego where police were going door to door in the area of 300 Olivewood Terrace looking for witnesses. Investigators said no neighbors were reporting having heard anything, including gunshots. As of 11pm Monday, there were no witnesses, suspects or motive. The crime is being investigated as a homicide.

San Diego Police Department was on scene at the Coronado Hospital with about eight squad cars and unmarked cars. Just before 11 pm, two suited detectives entered the emergency room soon followed by a U.S. Border Patrol officer. Hospital personnel were seen speaking with an officer and investigators at 10:45 pm. Worried family members also waited outside of the hospital.

The owner of the vehicle, a woman in her late 40s or early 50s, who did not speak English, was told by officers with translation by a young woman identifying as a cousin, that her car was a crime scene and would be impounded for investigation processing. When the cousin asked if there was blood in the car, the officer responded “yes, but it is unclear if the shooting happened inside or outside of the vehicle.” The vehicle’s owner was told she would be able to get her car back after the investigation was completed in a day or two.

Police do know the name of the victim, but as of this writing, it has not been released. It was also reported that Sharp Coronado Emergency Room and Hospital was functioning under normal conditions as the investigation continued in spite of the crime scene tape which was cordoning off the Prospect Place side parking entrance where the Camry was parked and hospital security stood outside of the ER entrance.
