After a frustrating loss to La Jolla High School, the boys’ rugby team stepped up their game against West View High School. “Unlike many other sports where the coach provides constant direction throughout the game, the players are making their own decisions and are in direct control of their own destiny,” says Coach Trujillo. A contrast from last week, the team was communicating effectively, even though West View took the lead in the first half.
The turning point occurred when a player on the opposing team tried to take down the Eight-Man Cal Frank. Unleashing last year’s “Kraken,” the Forwards Pack, known as the “Monster Squad,” made many strong runs, and Paul Fieweger broke five tackles and allowed Diego DeOrlow to make the conversion, the score now being 7-22 in favor of West View. Twenty-five minutes were left, and West View failed to score. Fieweger and DeOrlow continued to score, bringing the score to 14-22 with ten minutes left to play. At this point, West View was visibly tired and began to commit several penalties, slowing down the game. Coronado continued to apply pressure but could not close their opponent’s lead, and the clock ran out.
“It was a loss but the Brotherhood is strong and the players are destined for greatness,” commented Coach Trujillo. Click here to watch featured plays from the game. Player of the Match went to team captain Sam Glauser for his outstanding leadership.
On the other end of the spectrum, the girls’ rugby team recently had a round-robin scrimmage against Junipero Serra and San Diego High Schools. The first match, against Junipero Serra, was completely dominated by Coronado. Seniors Stefany James and Araceli Flores, as well as last year’s “Kraken,” Kate Buzby, made several tries, resulting in 43 points for Coronado. Defensively, Coronado did not allow their opponents to score once.
The second match, against San Diego, would not go too differently, as Sasha Wong gave the team momentum with the first try of the game. Rose Ty and Buzby would continue to score on their runs, breaking through their opponent’s defenses. The final score was 41-0.
