Last Tuesday, the cross country team began their league meets at Morley Field. Competing against five schools in Western League, both teams prevailed in third place. Already showing improvement, there were seven total PRs (Personal Records) in the boys’ varsity race and three from the girls’ varsity race.
Both boys’ JV and varsity teams ran in the same 3.08-mile race and followed Scripps Ranch and Cathedral Catholic in ranking. “My overall impression was that the boys did extremely well even though we lost 3 of our top runners to injuries this season,” says Coach Green. Spencer Busby placed sixth in the entire race, clocking his PR at 16:31 (Mile Pace: 5:22), half a minute faster than his previous PR. He was followed by Ian Hurlburt in ninth place, who finished in 17:00 (Mile Pace: 5:29), forty-five seconds faster than his previous PR. Other PRs were Patrick Harris, Connor Jaynes, Casey Harris, and Chris Russell. From the JV team, Nicholas Inzunza PR’d nearly thirty seconds faster as well.
The girls’ varsity team ran the same course, also with many PRs. In terms of ranking, they placed third, following University City and Scripps Ranch. Teresa Perez placed fourth, finishing the course in 19:10 (Mile Pace: 6:14). Madden Hundley followed in eleventh place, with a PR of 19:52 (Mile Pace: 6:29), twenty-one seconds faster than her previous. Claire Morris and Naya Tamariz both PR’d with times of 20:06 and 20:12, respectively. “The girls’ team had a few issues on the course, and a couple of runners were not up to par health-wise,” commented Coach Green. “We should come back strong next week for our 2nd cluster.”
“When the times for all 20 of the schools that competed over the City Conference course last week (Western, Eastern, and City League schools), the Western girls posted the 5 top team times and the Western boys the top 3. The top 3 teams in each case were the same as the ranks for just the Western league with Coronado 3rd in each case. The boys’ performance moved them into third place in the D-IV ranks while the girls remained in the number one spot.” To enter into CIF state competition, the top three Division IV teams for boys and the top two Division IV teams for girls will be able to race. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams, says Coach Green, have a chance to make it this far.
