Styling Essentials for Natural Hair

While styling your natural hair takes a lot of work, it’s an investment that will always pay off. However, as with most things in life, you need the right tools for the job. From conditioner to combs, we’ve compiled this list to keep you covered with each of the essential items you’ll need.

Hair Cream

Styling cream has quite a few benefits. A curly hair cream is perfect for defining curls that are moisturized and don’t have frizz, and once you find one, chances are you’ll love what it can do. Additionally, many are formulated with ingredients such as proteins, vitamins, and plant oils that add shine and tame frizz while not leaving your hair feeling stiff and crunchy.

Wide Tooth Comb

This tool is the best friend of every girl who has natural hair. Aside from utilizing your fingers when it comes to detangling, a wide-tooth comb is the second-best tool you can use. The wide-set teeth allow your kinks and curls to glide through easily while not creating more tangles. Be sure you use a plastic one as opposed to a metal one, so you don’t create any friction.

Shampoo

Of course, you have to wash your hair, but are you aware that having natural hair means that you need two distinct types of shampoo? The first type will need to clarify your scalp and hair, which means cleaning it a bit more deeply than your typical shampoo. The second should moisturize your hair. Clarifying shampoos tend to leave the hair brittle and dry, so you’ll need the second one to both cleanse and add moisture to it.

Conditioner

Giving your hair a deep condition following a good cleaning is critical if you want to keep it in the best shape possible. Deep conditioners work by penetrating the shaft of the hair in order to help it retain and restore moisture while also repairing any damage. A good deep conditioning treatment can also help to prevent breakage.

Silk or Satin Scarf

A satin or silk scarf is critical for anyone with natural hair if they want to keep their curls intact. You have to protect the hair from friction while you’re sleeping or when you wake, your hair will be dry and frizzy, or worse, broken. If you’re not comfortable sleeping with your hair wrapped, you may want to invest in a satin or silk pillowcase.

Wigs

One critical reason for some people preferring to wear a wig is cost-efficiency. Natural hair costs a lot to maintain. It doesn’t matter if it’s regular styling or just shampooing, you’ll need to spend quite a bit of money on making sure you keep your hair beautiful and healthy looking. Wigs can help you attain different styles without the added wear and tear on your hair.

Old Toothbrush

If you don’t want to invest in an edge tamer, which is simply a narrow, small brush for the edges of your hair, you can just use an old toothbrush. It’s a tested and tried tool to get those baby hairs laid and slayed.

Flexi or Perm Rods

The best thing you can do for natural hair is to avoid heat. You can get gorgeous curls by using Flexi or perm rods and avoiding curling irons. You can get these rods in a variety of sizes too so you can get any curl pattern you desire.

As you can see, it takes quite a bit to take care of natural hair. But it is absolutely worth it!
